Modeling land subsidence and uplift due to fluid withdrawal/injection from/into subsurface reservoirs
Achievements: Two- and three-dimensional nonlinear elasto-plastic finite element models have been developed to efficiently simulate land displacements induced by hydrocarbon extraction/storage from/into deep reservoirs along with fresh-water withdrawal from multiaquifer systems and water pumping into deep saline aquifers to mitigate relative sea level rise in coastal areas. The models account for: rock nonlinear mechanical behavior, both elastic and plastic, influence of the waterdrive surrounding the hydrocarbon fields, fault mechanics. Application to a number of real field cases characterized by very complex geometric features.

Numerical methods for stress/strain/pressure analysis in depleting poroelastic media
Achievements: The stress/strain fields induced within poro-elasto-plastic and faulted media (Biot equations) by fluid withdrawal/injection have been numerically characterized. Particular analyses have been carried on for overconsolidated geologic formations, infinite pore-pressure gradients, different types of surface boundary conditions. Coupling between stress and pore pressure has been proved to be weak on any time scale of practical interest in a typical normally consolidated and pressurized basin. Possible activation of faults crossing the reservoirs and induced seismicity are simulated.

Characterization of geomechanical properties of rocks
Achievements: Geomechanical simulations have been performed to assess the reliability of the radioactive marker technique currently used to monitor deep compactions. A geostatistical approach has been developed to derive a mechanical constitutive model for the Northern Adriatic sedimentary basin using these geophysical investigations. Rock compressibility is derived by measurements of soil surface displacements (modelling calibration, data assimulation)

Modeling fluid dynamics in complex unconfined/confined aquifer systems. Risk analysis
Achievements: A new quasi three-dimensional finite element model of groundwater flow has been developed for highly compressible multi-aquifer systems where aquitard permeability and elastic storage are dependent on hydraulic drawdown. Application of multiphase finite element models to simulate CO2 sequestration in deep geologic formations. Application of two- quasi-three- and three dimensional finite element models of unsaturated/saturated flow to a number of real field cases. Modelling of artificial aquifer recharge. Using experimental field and laboratory, invasive and non-invasive methodologies for the hydrologic characterization of coastal areas
Achievements: The integrated use of traditional hydrologic measurements (e.g. by pluviometers, pressure transducers, tensiometers, TDR, pt100) and geophysical surveys (e.g., by SEV, time-lapsed electrical tomographies, seismic acquisitions, TDEM) are used to characterize groundwater dynamics, saltwater intrusion in coastal basins, and to provided reliable information for numerical modeling. Hydrologic characterization of the peatlands bounding the Venice Lagoon: hydrology, CO2 efflux into the atmosphere, organic matter oxidation and related land subsidence, "mire breathing".
