MAT: FMRX-CT98-0229 (DG12-BDCN)

Network Acronym: PHATRICS
Title: Phase Transitions in Crystalline Solids
Contract Number: FMRX-CT98-0229 (DG12-BDCN)
Research Subject: Numerics of the propagation of phase-transition fronts
It seems that the thermodynamics of discrete systems (Schottky, Muschik) which compares a system and its immediate environment, is - through the notion of contact quantities - an appropriate formulation to describe the phenomenon of interest. To that effect, an original cellular automaton is being developed on the basis of this thermodynamics and on the notion of Eshelby stress tensor, the natural driving force for phase-transition fronts in anisotropic solids. Research consists in apprehending this novel approach, implementing it, and treating exemplary cases. The research will be conducted in close cooperation with Dr A.Berezovski (Institute of Cybernetics, Tallinn, Estonia) who initiated this approach.
Job Description: A 6 (six) months post-doc fellowship with a monthly allowance of 1700ECU/month (after deduction of social-cover expenses) is offered. Potential candidates should be citizens of any country of the European Union (except France) and of the Associated States, and must be not more than 35 years of age at the moment of the beginning of the post-doc fellowship (except for compulsory military service or child care).
The candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent title.
The applications should be sent together with a transcript or a copy of the candidate's university degrees, curriculum describing the candidate's scientific activity, publications and other documents which the candidate considers relevant to his qualification, and a letter of motivation.
Qualification of the candidate: - knowledge of standard continuum thermomechanics
- knowledge of basic numerical methods (FEM, FDM)
- a will to create something new and collaborate on an international level
- language: English; knowledge of basic French appreciated
